History of Sunbury

Sunbury on Thames is an historical parish and sub-district in the Spelthorne District, Middlesex.  It stands on the banks of the River Thames and is split into two separate parts known as either Lower Sunbury (being near the river) and Sunbury Common (being the upper area).

Known at Domesday as Suneberie, the name Sunbury was orignally taken from the Saxon chief Sunna who chose to establish himself in this place beside the Thames known afterwards as Sunnanbyrig (Sunna's Stronghold),  in 962 AD, King Eadgar gifted Sunnanbyrig to his kinsman Aelfheh in gratitude for his loyalty, as recorded in the Sunbury Charter, a Latin document using Anglo-Saxon placenames which is preserved in Westminster Abbey.

Traditionally, Sunbury has always been an attraction to visitors due to its location on the River Thames and a good example of this is the Sunbury Regatta, which is now in its 131st year! See our Events Page for further details.

We are very fortunate in Sunbury to have the benefit of the local Sunbury & Shepperton Local History Society which can provide an abundance of knowledge on our local area.  They have published quite a few books on various parts of our local history which are available for retail.
